It's called buoyancy (also known as the buoyant force). It is the force exerted on an object that is wholly or partly immersed in a fluid.
As a diver, it is important to be able to control this force. Or at least do the best you can. Look at a fish, they master buoyancy like no one else, take them as your example!
Buoyancy control underwater is probably one of the most important skills you need to master and without wanting to demotivate you, you can’t call yourself a diver if you can’t control yourself reasonable and know what to do if action is needed.
Not only for yourself, but also for marine life, buoyancy is extremely important.
Don't let them fool you! Don't let it scare you! Learning this important skill is not difficult and once under control, it is like riding a bike. Your instructor is responsible to teach you how to master buoyancy.
